Nyeri County is an emerging market endowed with natural resources and infrastructure that supports the efficient distribution of goods and services to the various urban centers in the Central Kenya region. Nyeri County plays host to both local and foreign investors in key economic sectors among them agriculture, food processing and value addition, manufacturing, healthcare, finance and tourism.

The Nyeri County Investment Promotion Unit is continuously facilitating investors in these sectors by providing assistance in establishing business networks with local suppliers of raw materials, as well as other business resources such as business permits and licenses, premises, utilities, investment incentives and any useful statistical data.

Business Registration
The initial step in starting a business in Kenya is to registration. Depending on the type of business, the registration process is different. The most common vehicle for conducting business is a Limited Liability Company. The initial step in forming a company is to register the proposed company name with the Registrar of Companies at the Attorney General's Chambers in Nairobi. The Memorandum and Articles of Association should be filed with the Registrar of Companies who, upon satisfaction, issues the Certificate of Incorporation. Other principal types of business enterprises in Kenya are:
  •     Branch offices of companies registered outside Kenya
  •     Partnerships
  •     Sole Proprietorships; and
  •     Societies

Land
Property in Nyeri County can be rented, leased or acquired on freehold or leasehold basis where a freehold title gives the owner absolute proprietorship over the land in perpetuity. A Leasehold property is held on a government lease for a specified period, usually 50 or 99 years. At the end of this period, the landowner applies for an extension of the lease, which is usually granted. At the Nyeri County Investment Promotion Unit we help investors identify suitable parcels of land where they can set up their investments. We are also actively advocating for land incentives to competitively position the county and attract additional investment.

Utilities and Raw Materials
With advances in technology and the advent of broadband Internet and E-Government services, one can apply for utilities online. Given the warm temperate climate in Nyeri an investor can also make use of alternative energy sources such as solar and biofuels. With an average annual rainfall of 1,004mm water harvesting and boreholes also provide alternative sources to water.
Depending on the sector of investment, the Nyeri County Government, through it's Investment Promotion Unit, facilitates access to the latest business-critical data, socio-economic statistics and information at the county level. This information can also include studies and reports that indicate the most suitable location where one can set up their investment so as to minimize the cost of raw materials.

Infrastructure, Access to Markets and Labour
As the leading economy in East Africa and as a gateway to African markets, Kenya’s strategic location and its well developed business infrastructure make it a natural choice for investors and many international firms have made it their regional hub.
Geographically, Nyeri County is located in the central highlands and is accessible by road, air and railway. This strategically positions the county to deliver fresh agricultural produce to local, regional and International markets availing to investors the opportunity to take advantage of Kenya's membership to three key regional economic blocs the East African Community (EAC), Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA) and South African Development Community (SADC). Kenya is also a signatory to a number of multilateral and bilateral trade agreements as part of its trade policy.

Furthermore, Kenya is one of the first Sub Saharan countries eligible to export its textile products to the USA under the provisions of the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA). Nyeri County is actively pursuing multilateral trade agreements with neighboring counties to further enhance the trade and investment opportunities in the region. Kenya prides herself in its large pool of highly educated, skilled and sought after work force in Africa, trained from within the country and in institutions in around the world. Nyeri County is abundant with a well-educated and skilled Labour force.
